Concert review Slayer & Megadeth, 14 April 2011, Klokgebouw Eindhoven
Under the tour name ‘The European Carnage Tour 2011’, Slayer & Megadeth preformed on 14 April in a sold out Klokgebouw in Eindhoven. As supporting Act the Dutch Diggeth was confirmed.
Klokgebouw
Slayer & Megadeth preformed in the Klokgebouw in Eindhoven. This concert hall looks like an old fabric hall. In a foyer there was opportunity to eat, to drink, buy coins, toilets, buy merchandise and rent lockers. The price of a coin was €2,50. Most drinks was 1 coin, food was minimum 2 coins. The lockers where €5-, + €5-,guarantor, but a little bit disappointment was the size of the lockers. These where very small, it was very hard to get my bag into it. After my bag (which wasn’t that big) there was still place left for one coat of a friend of mine, so I have to wear my leather jacket the whole evening. The merchandise wasn’t cheap. For a tour shirt you had to pay €30-, for a girl shirt €35-, but that is since I saw Slayer live for the first time (2006). There was just one input in the concert hall and there was access to a balcony. In the concert hall self there was no opportunity to smoke, in the Klokgebouw there was a large smoke room available.
Diggeth
Before Diggeth started I found a place in the front in the hall at the right, almost in front of the boxes. We had to wait for more than 30 minutes before Diggeth started to play. They played a mix of hard rock and heavy metal which sound likely, the sound also sounded nice. But it didn’t really overcome to the public, however the band was trying to. But it was a likely support act, I saw worse support acts for Slayer.
Megadeth
I never was a (huge) fan of Megadeth and I think I never become one. I don’t know much work from them. Megadeth started also to late, certainly 20 minutes. But directly they entered the stage, the atmosphere entered the concert hall, especially when Dave Mustain entered the stage. During the whole show, I noted that for much fans only Mustain was the main and the other of the bands were ‘just’ from Megadeth, this could also caused by the some arrogant traits of Mustain himself. Megadeth played good, I didn’t recognise any mistakes, but I don’t know much work of them. The sound was mixed nice. At the end of the show Megadeth leaves the stage with the impression that they would play a encore, but after long waited they didn’t come back and the lights in the hall turned on. I think that Megadeth was cut off by the organisation to prevent more outlet of the program.
Slayer
Some weeks before the tour started Jeff Hanneman, one of the two guitar players of Slayer was infected by Fasciitis necroticans , which is more well-know under the name flesh-eating bacteria, likely during a spider bite. Hanneman wasn’t unable to join this tour and this day Pat ‘O Brian from Cannibal Corpse would take in his place. I read on the boards that ‘O Brian had just one and a half week to learn the songs. So I was really curious how he would play the show.
This is one of the best Slayer shows I ever have seen, but sadly the quality and the mix of the sound screw it a little bit up. Slayer started with the intro and ‘World Painted Blood’. Slayer played a mix of new and old songs. Also ‘The Antichrist’ and ‘Black Magic’ were played. Tom Araya, singer and guitar player had a good voice that day. He even reached the high screams in ‘The Antichrist’ and ‘Angel of Death’, which I never heard before. The atmosphere was good in the concert hall, it was noticeable that it really went loss during Slayer, especially in the front, but not so heavy as it was some years ago.
Sadly the sound screw it up, which also could be caused that I stood right in front of the boxes. Where I stood the mix wasn’t that prefect. The bass and also the bass drum sounded sometimes like a chunk. Because I was in the front of Kerry King, I heard mainly King in the mix. When ‘O Brian had to play a solo, I could hear it very softly, almost over mixed by King. But I heard some reactions of people who were at the back at the area, which told the sound was actually very good. My experience is that standing in the front, close to the boxes is not the best place if you want to hear good sound. This show of Slayer was really a good show, Slayer was tight and good in shape. Also my compliments to ‘O Brian. He did an awesome job to replace Hanneman. Well, actually better then Hanneman when I saw Slayer the show before (013 Tilburg).
Conclusion:
+ Good performance of all bands
+ Nice public
+ good atmosphere
+ ‘O Brian did an awesome job to replace Hanneman
- Is it normal that people don’t go loss anymore?
- quality and price are not relative in the Klokgebouw
